Well consider this a stocking stuffer for 2016. The last numbered Double Dragon title dropped in 1990, with Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone. The original games were a staple in side-scrolling beat-em-up action on the NES. Known for its difficulty and combat, many spent hours in front of their Nintendo, trying to beat that Abobo guy.
The original company, Technos Japan is long gone, with the assets now being owned by Arc System Works, the company behind Guilty Gear and BlazBlue. The team working on Double Dragon 4 has many from the original Arcade title including producer Takaomi Kaneko, director Yoshihisa Kishimoto, character designer Koji Ogata, composer Kazunaka Yamane, and programmer Kei Oyama. The team seems commited to making the game look as authentic to the original series as possible.
The cherry on top is the release date, January 30th 2017. With “enhanced graphics” and sprites, we can expect a deeper combo system and many co-op memories to come.
