Check out the All-New ANTiFanboy Podcast
Back in 2006, a group of angry young comic book nerds started a podcast with the focus of highlighting which comics that released that week were the must-read books but as the show grew in popular, it expanded into a show about video games, movies, television, comics, and everything else in between. Just remember one thing: We don't talk. We argue!

X-Men Castpocalypse

With comic book films dominating the summer movie market in 2014, it’s no surprise that movie studios are fast tracking production on sequels and green lighting new properties yet to hit the big screen. An exciting part of seeing these films come into fruition is seeing which actors will take on these iconic roles. There are a variety of reactions from fans when there is a huge casting announcements are made right before production begins. A casting director for any of these films has the daunting task of choosing the right actor for the role or he or she must face the furor of fanboys everywhere.

When X-Men first hit theaters way back in 2000, Bryan Singer was able to cast a team of eclectic actors to take on the mutant super hero team. Now 14 years later, the X-Men film franchise boasts more award winning film, television, and theater actors out of all the comic book movie franchises out there. With pre-production on X-Men: Apocalypse (sequel to $748 million grossing X-Men: Days of Future Past) scheduled to begin in December and cameras set to roll in Canada in April, casting is surely under way for more mutants to join returning castmembers James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult.

So which mutants might join this film? It’s hard to tell but Bryan Singer and screenwriter Simon Kinberg already confirmed that younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm will appear. Channing Tatum is all but confirmed for fan favorite Gambit and no doubt that Evan Peters will return as the scene stealing Quicksilver. With casting announcements to be made over the coming months, lets take a look at who may be suiting up for one of 2016’s most anticipated movies.

 jean grey

Jean Grey

Will a natural red head finally play a famous comic book red head? Over the years famously blonde actresses have taken on these roles (Kirsten Dunst in Spiderman, Scarelett Johansson in the Avengers) but if casting directors look close enough they may find that unique fiery red headed actress to take on the role originated by Famke Jannsen. Two names that have floated around are that of teenage actresses Bella Thorne and Sophie Turner.

16 year old Bella Thorne, a former Disney actress, has mentioned in several in interviews and even in her own Twitter account campaigning to be in the X-Men films (she recently tweeted a fan who suggested she play Jean). After working mostly in comedic roles, Thorne will show her dramatic chops in the upcoming Amityville: The Awakening which is set to open in 2015.

 sophieturner

18 year old British actress Sophie Turner is the fan favorite for the role. Most famous for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, Turner also has credits in the film The Thirteenth Tale and the BBC film Another Me. She’ll take on the lead role as Mary Shelley in the upcoming film Mary Shelley’s Monster sometime in 2015.

Cyclops/Scott Summers

Out of all the characters in the X-Men films, Cyclops was probably the one who had the least character development. James Marsden did the best that he could with what little he had to do over the course of 3 films. Hopefully this new incarnation of the character will give him the screen time and development that Cyclops deserves.

If there is one thing that we know Bryan Singer loves, its that of young, skinny, twinky, white actors. It’s not that hard to notice a trend in his casting (Shawn Ashmore, Aaron Stanford, Ben Foster, Nicholas Hoult, to name a few), so we can probably expect the same when it comes to finding Cyclops.

dylanobrien

23-year old Dylan O’Brien is a name that has been brought up to take on the role. Most famous for his role Stiles Stilinksi on MTV’s Teen Wolf, O’Brien also had roles in the comedy The Internship and the teen dramedy The First Time. He takes on the lead role of Thomas in the recently released YA film adaptation The Maze Runner.

nicocylopse

26 year old Nico Tortorella is another name that has been thrown into the mix. Tortorella originally auditioned for the role of Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past but as we all know Evan Peters won the part. Could Cyclops be his foray into the X-Men universe? Nico Tortorella’s credits include CW’s The Beautiful Life and Fox’s The Following, and the feature films Scream 4 and Twelve.

stormnegro

Storm/Ororo Munroe

One of Marvel Comics’ favorite leading ladies, its unfortunate that the character hasn’t been shown her full potential in the X-Men films. Oscar winner Halle Berry gave her best performance in X-Men: Days of Future past and that’s because she was only in it for about 5 minutes. Hopefully a new actress will breathe life into the character in X-Men Apocalypse.

lupitastorm

31 year old Lupita Nyong’o has been a favorite for the role. After winning an Oscar for her role in 12 Years a Slave (which also starred Michael Fassbender), the actress has been in high demand. She will lend her voice to an upcoming live action version of the Jungle Book and will be seen in the highly anticipated Star Wars Episode 7.

katgraham

25 year old Kat Graham bears more of resemblance to Halle Berry than Lupita Nyong’o. Most famous for her role on the CW’s The Vampire Diaries, Graham also had roles in straight to DVD films Honey 2 and Dance Fu. Maybe X-Men: Apocalypse will make her a big screen success.

Expect casting to be confirmed in the coming months. As with all early comic books casting these names are all speculation for now. Bryan Singer and company may very well throw curveballs in the coming months and eye brow raising choices. In addition to these characters, other mutants are certain to appear in upcoming film. With X-Men: Days of Future Past resetting the timeline, screenwriter Simon Kinberg said that certain characters could appear or reappear from the original trilogy.

Official synopsis:

Apocalypse takes place a decade after Days of Future Past and is a seamless next step in the story. The altering of time has unleashed a new and uniquely powerful enemy. Charles (James McAvoy), Erik/Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and Hank/Beast (Nicholas Hoult) are joined by young Cyclops, Storm, Jean and others as the X-Men must fight their most formidable foe yet: an ancient unrelenting force determined to cause an apocalypse unlike any in human history.
