I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I am not a fan of trailers for television. There is just too much going on in a seasons worth of TV to cram it all in one trailer. Hell, there’s not enough context to make a decent trailer for an upcoming episode! Supergirl attempts to buck this trend by dropping a mammoth 6-minute trailer that should be a case study for why trailers need to be under a certain length.
Half of it is terrible, it’s Kara (pronounced Car-Ra) running around as an assistant/secretary or something, then she has a love interest, then another love interest shows up in the form of Jimmy Olsen who’s now a 6 foot something hunk (see where I’m going with this?). Then she gets a sidekick in the form of John McFriendzoned and sisterly drama is all over the place. Not to mention there are so man winks and nudges about the “Other Guy” that even the Gotham writers are telling them to cool it. Add in some pop music and it’s like that Jem trailer just released in TV form.
The other half is not…. terrible? I don’t know how I feel about it quite yet. The trailer is so long that maybe the less offensive stuff seems good when it’s peppered in between some serious eye rolling moments. Some entertaining scenes like Kara saving a crashing plane, her getting the hang of her powers, the bit about why Supergirl and not Super Woman and even some of the dorky moments where she keeps going through capes because of her crime fighting. It’s these moments which gives me hope that this isn’t going to be the train wreck that it potentially could be.
Almost if not every shot if from the pilot which for seasoned TV watchers, know that pilots have a thankless job, especially for super hero shows. They have to shoehorn all this back story in the most obnoxious, obvious way possible so the average half distracted viewer can get a grasp on the fact that MAYBE Supergirl IS IN SOME WAY related to “that other guy” wink wink nudge nudge hurhurhruhruhrurhruh *vomits*.
So what do you think? Is it all good? All terrible? Is 6 minutes just too much? (yes)
