1. Nintendo Wavebird (TIED)

[avatar user=”Jon” size=”50″ align=”left”]Jon[/avatar]Jon: The best games on Nintendo’s Gamecube stand as some of the best games of that generation (or even all time!), either first-party developed games (ie. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker) or even cross platform games (ie. Resident Evil 4, which was originally exclusive to GCN).  The design of the controller and the button layout on the face were integral to the gameplay of these games.  Trust me, I’ve played Resident Evil 4 on every single platform it has been released on and nothing compares to the original experience (even the “definitive” version released on the Wii).

Nintendo is known as a pioneer when it comes to controller design.  Nintendo innovates, the other companies follow.  It’s been like that since the original NES release and it’s one of the factors that makes them relevant in today’s cutthroat Video Game Tech Industry and has set it apart from the rest.

The Wavebird paved the way for modern gaming.  As the first first-party wireless controller unit, they put Sony and Microsoft on notice and (like always) the other companies followed suit and now wireless controllers are standard.

At this point, all attempts from wireless controllers were poorly executed. The wireless capabilities of this thing is what finally cut the cord on all controllers. Now I can poop and play games off my actual Wii U controller. Thanks for the future, Wavebird!

It, like the N64 controller introduced rumble this bad boy introduced legit wireless functionality. Before this you were stuck with some shitty madcatz controller that your aunt got you and she was bitter that she paid so much and you were bitter that you got a shitty controller, therefore ruining Christmas.

Going along the the trend of not going with the trend the Wavebird is based off the Gamecube which has an…. interesting button layout. Don’t get me wrong, everything works fine and is responsive but it looks well… it looks fucking weird. It looks like the weird 3rd generation inbred kid that the Playstation Dual Shock probably would have if controllers had penesis and were allowed to bang. It has your four button layout but askewed. The B button is trailing off like a deformed lazy eye and the Z button sits in front of the R shoulder button like a weird growth and sure why not have two different sized analog sticks? Sigh….

Aside from my rant that all controllers should look beautiful everything on this thing works great and sure the controller weighs like 5lbs because you had to steal all the AA batteries from your living room remotes but the wireless function is the best thing to happen to modern gaming controllers thus far.
